Hello!

I have been in Japan for almost two months now and this is only my second time WWOOFing ever. I must say that Ryo-san and Yoko-san are extremely accommodating and very nice people! Their two kids, Keita and Kosuke, are very fun to be around and have tons of energy! I came to Takato after a week in Tokyo and it was an awesome change of pace. If you love the mountains and endless nature, then this is the place to be!

The work differs from day to day so you will learn many skills and hopefully see a side of Japan you have never seen before. Ryo-san showed me many things including, harvesting tomatoes and other vegetables, insulating and remodeling the house, transporting rice shells for plant roots, packing vegetables for delivery, and lots more! You will most likely help out Yoko-san to take care of the house and play with the kids which is always fun. Also, walk their dog Clifford who is super friendly and you can play with their new kitty too, Saburo!

You have a lot of free time in the afternoon so definitely check out all the shrines and temples in the area and you must hike Moriyasan Hill! It is beautiful at the top, you wont regret it. If the weather is bad, have no fear, their are multiple books to choose from in English and Japanese!

All in all, this is a wonderful family that strives for greatness and a healthy, organic, traditional Japanese lifestyle that I think everyone should experience!

See Ya!

Organic Farm

This was my first experience wwoofing in Japan and I had a good experience
throughout my time here. The food was great, the family were welcoming and
friendly and I met some other wwoofers who were also nice and really made
the experience a good one.

The working day is short but intensive with 3 sections which add up to about 5
or 6 hours a day with the rest of the time free. The work was varied with the
early morning spent harvesting vegetables and the latter part of the day spent
either packing or helping to repair or rebuild some of the farm buildings.

The local area is really beautiful with some great hikes, interesting shrines and
also a local onsen. The family invited me to several local events in the village
which really makes you feel part of the community and gives a real taste of
rural Japan. I would definitely recommend this farm for anyone considering
wwoofing in Japan or Nagano.

If I was to put my experience in to words they would be, mind blowing, fantastic and
brilliant. From day one I was scared about W.W.O.O.F-ing as this was my first time.
My fears were blown away as soon as I was picked up from the train station. With a
warm welcome the family of 4 took me in. From the beginning I had a joyful ride of
fun, work and play. They are located in an amazing place. With forest on both sides,
hidden temples and shrines all waiting to be discovered with every walk and bike ride.
Then go home and be welcomed with the freshest food in the land, at the end of
each day. Most of which you have help pick.

I knew from the get go that having the right W.W.O.O.F-ing experience would
determine if I go and W.W.O.O.F again. I cannot think of a better W.W.O.O.F-ing
experience than this. I would recommend bringing an international drivers licence for
motorcycles, as some of the most interesting places maybe a bit on the remote side.

The work itself is great. Not too hard but also ever changing and interesting. repairing
green houses, picking fresh vege, cooking, building a table and caring for the plants is
but a short list of the new and interesting things that they will teach you.
Thank you for everything as i have loved every last moment of it

P1100602.JPGP1100657.JPG

<Josie>

It has been four months since we (my husband and I) ventured to Takato. In those four months, we have experienced quite a bit. I like that we have seen the farming process from the start to harvest season. During that time, my favorite part was making dirt for the seedlings. I never thought about where the dirt from the home center came from when I had bought it before. How was it so perfectly black and beautiful? I had no idea that there was a hand-turning machine that could do that. From now on, I will put that machine on my birthday or Christmas wish list. Other than the seedling dirt, we have seen the process of planting, fertilizing, and of course -- weeding!

The most exciting part of the last four months was the fire in the field next to the greenhouses. I would have to rate that as one of my most scared moments in life. I was told to grab a pitchfork and watch the perimeter to control the fire. The next thing I know, the fire is getting close the plastic on the greenhouse and burning the white peach fuzz on my face. Good thing the host is a volunteer firefighter; otherwise, it could have been a major news event!

As for the people, everyone was wonderful. Especially the host family -- thank you so much for all that you have given me in this time! The other WWOOFers were beyond interesting. Everyone so original in personality. I think we saw about 30 different WWOOFers come and go. It was sad to see (most) of them go. And the other visitors -- too many to count and remember!

The days here were relaxed. In the morning, we started at about 8:00 and went till 10:30, then had a 30-minute break (which was too long for me, but at the same time gave me more energy to work). After that, we worked until 1:00, then had lunch. Most days, this was too short for a work day. I often felt like we should work just a little bit longer to get just a little more done. Each person had to switch up with cooking, which was very fun seeing what people could make with the ingredients that we had. It was always delicious! After lunch, I tried to get out to exercise as we had about two hours after working till dinner/bath making time. Basically, there is plenty of time in the day to do what you need to/want to do.

In sum, this is great place to experience organic farming. If you come here, you will not be disappointed!

This was my second WWOOFing host in Japan, and I have to say that life in Tokato was fantastic! I only stayed with Yoko and the family for a little over 2 weeks,
but from the first day I felt comfortable and included in the group. I spent time with
many of the WWOOFers who posted below, and I enjoyed spending time with each
one of them. The house is very traditional looking, with sliding doors, and straw mat
floors, and an Ofuro bathtub (you have to heat the tub with a fire) and all of these
made my experience much more enjoyable.

Life on the farm here is very organic. From using organic toothpaste and soaps, to
cooking meals with the vegetables you harvested earlier that day, you will notice a
significant change in your diet and lifestyle. Coming here it might help to have some
experience cooking because you're going to need to prepare lunch or dinner at some
point, and the recipes are whatever you can throw together. I actually enjoyed this a
lot because it forced me to think outside of the box when preparing meals.
Sometimes an idea didn't work out and we would end up with a burnt mush of fried
tomatoes, but that was all part of the learning experience.

The actual work wasn't too bad. I came during the harvest, so my daily tasks
generally included, weeding, harvesting, and packaging (big tomatoes, cherry tomatoes,
zucchini, cucumbers, green peppers, potatoes, basil, mint, onions, garlic). The work
day ends pretty much after lunch time 12-1, so there is plenty of free time to
exercise or read or do work. FYI they have a LAN line but no wifi.

I had an amazing time with Yoko and the family and would love to keep in touch and
maybe come back to visit in the future! Thank you!

It was my first time wwoofing in Japan and it was supposed to last only 2 weeks
but it got turned into 1 month since I had so much fun.
You are very welcome and feel part of the family here. I had the chance to talk
with the hosts whose english is really good, so there's no language barrier, I learned
a lot of things from them and the other wwoofers. Even if there is some rules to
follow I think the hosts are very comprehensive and nice to the wwoofers. You
only work in the morning, sometimes there is some tough work but you always
have a 30 minutes break. The kids are also really energetic and the people from
the village really kind to foreigners. I want to keep in touch with these hosts.
Thank you very much.

Thanks a lot to this host for having me four weeks.

Comments on...
1. Organic Farming
-> Physical labor; I was ready for the field working though the jobs in the farm was
so tough indeed. I’m really glad to survive now. I could learn a lot of things here.
It is so complicated to describe the detail of the works.
-> Believing my five senses; Frankly speaking, careful observation is the key to
succeed in agriculture.
-> Chemical analysis; Chemical soil analysis should be required when I start to farm.
I’d like to make the best use of my chemical knowledge for farming.
-> Substitution (Reuse & Recycle); I learned that we don’t have to buy so many
staffs. For example, my father owns a large plot of the bamboo mountain, I can use
the leaves for mulching, the soil for compost, ashes for fertilizer and stems and
branch for mainstay.
-> Less reflection; Unfortunately I couldn’t have enough time to refract on the
everyday working.

2. Organic Life
-> Our life is connected to the internal nature (our body) and the external nature
(environmental) directly and indirectly. In our modern society, we have been hiding
the discomfort things such as human waste, waster water and bad smell as our
society has been developing.
-> I suppose that our parents generation don’t prefer inconvenient life such as
farming in local region and less electrified life style. On the other hand, some of my
generation are going back to inconvenient and traditional life.

3. Environmental Education (Playing with kids)
-> Their organic life can be considered as an environmental education itself; Those
experiences with kids were not planed as a program of environmental education
though I saw that kids were learning a lot from other kids, their parents and visitors
and through their daily life and the nature.

-> Introducing a part of organic life to environmental education; It is difficult to spent
enough time with kids. When I hold an event in future, I’d like to have a class which
can give a good lesson of nature (or ecology) through organic farming to kids
(objective ages is elementary school). For example, Vegetable organic garden without
chemicals could be nice. I’d like to give some opportunities to think about “WHY are
the synthesized chemicals such as insecticide and surfactants not good for our body
or environment?” to kids.

-> Concerning Global Warming; I’d like to give an opportunity to think about “WHY
can firewoods be better than petroleum to stop global warming?”

-> Foods are living things as well; If kids can only see the foods such as soy source,
bread and fruit juice in the supermarket, they possibly think the foods are made of
plastics. They should have opportunities to see and know the foods are made from
vegetables, crops, fish and animals. Human can’t survive without consuming living
things.

4. Cooperating with WWOOFers
-> Working and living with the people from other countries is definitely the real
pleasure of WWOOFing!
-> Communication with them is one of the greatest experiences for me.

5. WWOOFing in Foreign Countries
-> I’m thinking to visit and do WWOOFing in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and so
on.
-> One of the reasons why I started WWOOFing is that I’d like to work for farming in
foreign countries.
-> Every country and every farm has its own way to manage its organic farm.
-> I’d like to invite GOOD WWOOFers to home; I’d like to meet and share
information with other WWOOFers in foreign countries.
-> ”Permaculture” sounded interesting too. I need more information about that.

6. Farming & WWOOF Hosting in Home Town
-> My father owns some plots around our house. The total area is 70a at rough
estimate. Most of the plots are being kept idle. I’d like to make better use of them.
Farming could be a better way of use.
-> I should prepare the plots for farming before I start to accept WWOOFers.
-> Still I’m not sure to be able to make my living by farming though I’m thinking to
cultivate more plots and plant some more vegetables and fruit trees.
-> I’d like to start to accept WWOOFers after I finish to improve the plots and my
house.

Summary
I think that I got more confident of working in farm compared with before. The
reason why I challenge something new is mostly that I just want to see the matter
with own eyes. I’m glad to work with the full-time farmer. Still I can’t decide to
change my job to a full-time farmer though I think that I have some options to do
self-realization. I’d like to continue doing jobs which are related to organic farming
and environmental education. I’d like to become an expert who can give proper
advice to people about doing organic farming and eco-friendly activities.

I have felt so much at home at Yoko and Ryo’s place. They are so welcoming and
understanding and it seems they are living the life they dream of, so it makes them
happy people to be around 

The farm is an inspiration also. Ryo is one of the very small minorities of real organic
farmers making a full lifestyle from growing vegetables in Japan. It is amazing to see
how he handles the large scale on which he works, and produces such abundance to
share with the wider community, with the help of only a few wwoofers at a time!

It’s a pleasure to eat from this fertile soil and I look forward to coming back in the
truly abundant summer. Also to get involved with the very Japanese activity of rice-
growing would be a great time to come here! In general the food we’ve been eating
has been replenishing my soul after the junk food mayhem of Tokyo. And getting
involved with the cooking and other family tasks has been a very cosy way to live.

The area of Takato is worth checking out as it has a good community vibe and some
traditional feel in places too. There are some nice walks and a lake and I’m sure
many other day-trips I didn’t get around to!

So, if you want to enjoy wwoofing with some open-minded people who will be very
accommodating and welcoming, and immerse yourself in a humble organic lifestyle,
come join farm88 for a little while! Thanks Yoko and Ryo for the lovely time, K and K for all the laughs! Doomo arigatoo gozaimashita!

Thanks a lot to Ryo and Yoko for having me 17 days .
It was a very good experience for me to work and live in the Japanese way .
The work in this farm is very nice we use to work in the fresh air which is very
important for me .

I as a one who have some experience with non organic farming was very happy to
see that we as humans can do it better ( using organic methods ).
After working time we get some free time so we can enjoy this mountain area of
Japan.
This is a really small town but it offers a lot :
in walking distance there is a hot spring, two amazing japanese restaurants, and a
dojo where Aikido Classes are offered.

Thanks again to this host I highly recommend this farm ;)

First of all i would like to thank Ryo, Yoko, and their kids for making me feels
at home at a foreign land. The house is very comfortable to stay in and the
kids are fun to play with. There are constantly other wwoofers from all over
the world coming and staying here at the same time as well.

My stay was from the beginning to mid May and there were not much planting
and harvesting going on. However, we were preparing the field, building green-
house and designing the chicken coop and they were pretty enjoyable. Since
some of the works are more physically demanding, the host makes sure that
we have plenty of rest in between with delicious tea and snacks.

After work, we have plenty of time to explore this quiet small town with
interesting people, places and of course delicious food. It was a great learning
experience and I would recommend everyone to wwoof here.

(WWOOF=World Wide Opportunities on
Organic Farms )

These hosts are a great Japanese family and have pretty much everything a
WWOOFer would be looking for in a cultural experience. The village they live in
has a decent amount of history in itself and the surrounding areas are rich in
Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples and architecture. Where they live is a small
very classic Japanese village seemingly right out of the movies.

The work is farm work, so sometimes it can be as easy as planting seeds and
sometimes it can be clearing fields, but nothing that will make you exhausted. They
both seem to be concerned with the safety and well-being of their workers, always
telling me to take it slow if the work is more strenuous, which is rare when it comes
to manual labor. They only have you work from around 8am-1pm with a break at
1030am to cut up the small work day. However this house is not for lazy people, and
there is usually something you can help them with after lunch and before dinner.

Most of the things you will be eating are either from the farm or wild vegetables from
around their village or amazing rice from their region. The hosts can both speak E
nglish and there isn't really anything they can't understand as one of them is fluent
and the other speaks fairly well. They have two adorable kids that are both very
energetic which is usually how kids are at that age, especially boys. They are amazing
cooks! There wasn't one dish I didn't love and their food will give you plenty of
energy for the day and fill your belly at dinner time. Their food is mostly vegetarian so
if you don't like healthy food stay away.

There are so many things to do around the area for nature lovers. First of all Sakura
here is sooooooo good. The city near them looks like a pink cloud has settled over
the area, there are so many cherry blossoms! The hosts are very relaxed and one of
them had no problem pulling over while we were driving so I could get a picture of
the Sakura covered town. Aside from that there is a small mountain with a trail that
takes about 15 minutes to hike up with a great view that I would assume would be
even more beautiful during summer because of the many rice fields that cover the
landscape. There is a hot spring within 15 minutes walk and their is a great hiking area about 30 minutes away.

The weather where they live is some of the best in Japan. Although my stay wasn't
during the summer, they say that during the summer when it is extremely hot and
humid elsewhere, their area stays nice and dry. If you are interested in doing specific
things in the area they will usually be able to find a way for you to do it. I wanted to
see Sakura at one of the best spots in Japan, conveniently located only a 15 minute
drive away, and they took the whole family in the morning and went out of their way
to get me a disposable camera so I could take a ton of pictures. These are really
good people and you'll know it right away when you come to stay. I am so thankful
for my time here and you'll really be missing out if you don't stay here while you're in
Japan.

Yoko and Ryo were my first wwoofing hosts and if the rest are half as good
then I'll be more than happy.

They are genuinely lovely people who open their home and almost immediately make
you feel like one of the family, the work itself was at times demanding but hardly
exhaustive and with relatively short work days leaves plenty of time to explore or
just relax.

Ryo is also prone to taking semi frequent trips to the surrounding towns, especially
after you mention something you would like to see or do, allowing you to explore the
region and even going out of his way so I could see a few of the tourist spots. Even
if you don't speak Japanese that's no problem with Yoko being fluent and Ryo being
more than conversational, though he himself seems to doubt it at times, they also
helped me immensely with my Japanese and somehow didn't get annoyed by my
inane and constant questions on the subject.

The kids should also be mentioned they have two young boys who whilst occasionally
can be a bit of a handful if you're trying to read, are for the most part free
entertainment and a nice diversion.

Basically I couldn't recommend coming here high enough and encourage anyone
who gets the chance to. And I wish all the best to Ryo, Yoko and the kids for any
and all future endeavors and thank them for everything.

The first afternoon here I went for a short walk and end up blowing rockets with an elder neighbor to scare the monkeys were eating the carrots of his garden. That
allows to picture of how remote is the location of Organic Farm 88 and the nature
surrounding this rural and small but dynamic community in a valley in the hills of
Nagano. That is both beautiful and somehow challenging, but the attitude of the host
family (all of them) makes you feel part of it from the beginning, so there is only left
the joy living, working and learning in such a special place (and nevertheless the luck
of eating the organic delicious veggies you help to raise)

It has been a fantastic stay with Ryo, Yoko and their two kids! Since the harvest
season is almost over I've been doing pretty varied and not so demanding work,
approx. 5 hours a day.

The food has been great and Ryo and Yoko have been really considerate with me
only eating vegetarian food and not speaking any Japanese. On the weekends we've
done several nice outings and they've showed me both an onsen and the central
alps. This is a great host if you want to experience japanese family life, organic
small-scale farming and the beautiful nature of Nagano, but maybe not if you mind
loud and energetic kids and dog and the cold nights and mornings of Nagano.

Hi there! Myname is John, I am from Germany and this was my first time Wwoofing.
I stayed for three week at Organic Farm 88 with the Hayashi family. In this three weeks
I have gained so many new experiences it felt like staying for three months: I participated
in rice harvest, helped repairing Japanese paper doors (very unique experience!), improved
my Japanese a little through daily life conversations, played with the children, prepared
“maki” (firewood) and heated the ofuro, helped packing vegetables for shipping and
went to the onsen several times. ;-)

Ryo-san and Yoko-san are very friendly, kind hearted, open minded and very caring in
times of need. Here at Organic Farm 88 you can really become part of a Japanese family,
with all its benefits and some duties.

So if you like nature, an organic lifestyle and daily “oishii” (delicious) organic dishes you
should really come here for Wwoofing!

I am glad I chose this host for Wwoofing and want to say: thank you and “hontoni
arigatoo gozaimasu” to Ryo-san and Yoko-san for the wonderful time I spend here
with them!

I had a fantastic time staying with the Hayashi family. Everyone was incredibly
kind and considerate. I really appreciated how they went out of their way to do
things for me. For example, when they discovered that I am interested in teaching
English in Japan, they arranged for their American friend who teaches English in
Japan to come over for dinner and talk with me about his current job.

Working with the farmers in the fields was quite enjoyable. Each day brought new
and different things to do, which I liked because it meant that I never did exactly
the same thing two days in a row. The pace at which we worked was perfect—
challenging enough to be tiring, yet punctuated by frequent breaks that were
accompanied by delicious snacks and good conversation. The food I ate while
staying with the Hayashi family was always delicious and always fresh. We led a
truly farm-to-table lifestyle, and every day we ate tons of newly-picked vegetables.
It was lovely.

I also really appreciated Ryo and Yoko’s organic attitude toward life. They are
serious about being sustainable and environmentally friendly, which is not always
the case with all WWOOF hosts. Because I love kids—especially young kids—I was
very happy to stay with the Hayashi family because every day I was able to play with
their two young sons. However, I will say that the two children are quite loud and
rambunctious. They always ALWAYS wanted to play. If you are someone who enjoys
lots of quiet, private time, then staying with this host perhaps may not suit your
lifestyle. Also, if you are not an animal person, then this host may not be for you, as
they have both a dog and a cat who are often underfoot.

Overall, I really loved my stay with the Hayashi family. I really and truly felt like part of
their family, especially during mealtimes when everyone came together and shared
food and fellowship. In the future I definitely intend to come back and visit them again.

The Hayashi family has a good thing going at their farm, "Organic Farm 88".
Their healthy, organic, and sustainable lifestyle was very appealing to me.
It is a great place to get some relief from the hot summer months.
Prior to coming here I stayed with a host in Shizuoka, it was quite possibly
the hottest weather I've ever experienced, even at night. Here in Ina, it is
mild in the summer day, then at the night it gets significantly more cool making
for a very comfortable sleep. Not to mention the scenery is beautiful here.
There are plenty of places to hike in the mountains and see the beautiful alps
of Nagano. The work here was not too demanding, and it was nice to start early
and end before noon each day. Yoko is a good cook, and I was delighted by
all her traditionally fermented and homemade Japanese sauces and foods.
They really live a sustainable, primitive lifestyle in all aspects. If you don't
speak Japanese have no fear because Yoko speaks fluent english, and was
even an instructor at University of Colorado! Ryo was very wise and laid back,
I enjoyed his traditional aromatherapy methods to help healing of a very nasty
cut I had. This place has left a lasting impression on me, it's immensely
beautiful here.

This farm is a good place to stay for learning about Japanese style organic farming,
Japanese language and any aspect of Japanese culture. Ryo and Yoko are very happy to
share their knowledge with you and will thoughtfully choose excursions for you and try
their best to accommodate any kind of excursion you have in mind. Plenty of history around
and a small Shinto temple just over the road that I think is much more interesting than
all the big, famous temples.

The scenery here is gorgeous, small, steep mountains covered in pines and usually wrapped
in morning mist. And one day I saw a group of monkeys just across the road from where
I was working.

An evening visit to the local hot spring is great; sitting in the warm water watching
the moon shine through the trees was my true Japanese moment. An evening walk is also
good for inspiration.

This is a place to work hard, learn plenty and relax deeply.

I`m very grateful I came here, I was able to plan my future.

Thank you Ryo and Yoko.

It’s hard to put into words how happy I am that I ended up at this farm.
Ryo truly cares about organic farming and it shows through the produce.
I’m in love with where this farm is located. One of the best feelings for me was picking
my head up while working and glancing at the mountains. The kids are energetic,
full of livelihood, and are a blast to play around with. Every meal was delicious. Ryo, Yoko,
Kayta, and Kosuke are downright great people who have done so much to accommodate

have done for me.
I hope to comeback and visit them in the future!

I only stayed for one day, coming up from Tokyo on a weekend to help plant rice.
Yoko was very attentive to the details of the accommodations, and made some amazing food. Our workday for rice planting wasn’t too long, only about 8 am to 3pm, with a two hour break, because it’s pretty strenuous work, bending over in shin deep mud and water (and watch out for sun burn!). But I love getting out of the city and working with my hands and especially with the earth.

I was inspired to come to Japan by Studio Ghibli’s ‘Only Yesterday’,
but the beauty of Nagano’s cloud-shrouded mountains and midori paddy fields surpassed even what I could have hoped for.

I really felt like part of the family with the Hayashis. Both working in the fields with the trainees and the everyday lifestyle, helping with meals and playing with the kids, somehow had a warm feeling to it. It was great being able to get a taste of such a simple, satisfying life, and eating Japanese food every day. (I think rice and miso soup is going to become my permanent breakfast from now on!)

Some of the amazing experiences I was able to have included picking tomatoes at dawn (the best I’ve ever tasted), traditional dancing at a matsuri in nearby Takato, and seeing how farming can be done naturally without chemicals, right in the middle of the Japanese countryside.

Thanks for everything, and for putting up with my awful Japanese!

This was my first time wwoofing and my first time in Japan so I didn’t really know what to expect but I wanted to get in touch with the local people and culture and not only do sightseeing.
First off I want to say that I had a great time,.but August is probably the worst time to visit Japan because it is incredibly hot and humid and I was not used to it. Ryo-san and Yoko-san were really helpful and patient with arranging my trip because I had no idea how to get around in Japan. The place itself is quiet but it is a traditional Japanese countryside village and the surroundings with all the mountains are beautiful and you can go hiking if you like to. They have 3 trainees in their 20’s whom I spent the first 3 days with because it was Obon-time and the family was visiting elsewhere. They were really nice and we got along very well. I don’t speak too much Japanese so language has been a hinderance at times. They took me out to Japanese restaurant and an onsen, which I really wanted to visit and we also did some fireworks like its custom in Japan at Obon-time. It all was really different from what I am used to but I chose this place because I wanted to see what traditional Japanese live is like. The 3 trainees and Ryo, Yoko and the 2 children are like a big family and I learned a lot about Japanese mentality. The work was a little hard at times but as I said it was more because I chose the worst time in august with the hot summer. I worked much less than the 3 trainees and Ryo-san who always get up at 5 a.m. and often work till 5 p.m. with some breaks of course. I usually worked 2-3 hrs in the morning and another 2 or so in the afternoon but most of the time I got the easy work too. I must say I admire what they are doing because it is really hard work to do this every day. I learned a lot about farming but they could not explain everything to me because of language problems sometimes. The meals though were really nice and I enjoyed them. They cooked from their own harvest of course and it was always fresh and delicious and at every meal everyone got together and it was always lively and I enjoyed that very much.
I learned a lot about Japan, its culture ad mentality but also about farming and I enjoyed my stay very much. Thanks a lot for everything!
